What are agentic NFTs?

An agentic NFT is a token that stands for an agent, not only a picture. The owner can sell it. Apps can ask the chain who owns it, what it is called, and how to reach it.

Five words you will see

Identity

A number on a public list that says “this agent exists.” ERC-8004 uses an ERC-721 token for that number. The owner of the token is the owner of the identity. Selling the token sells the identity.

Memory

What the agent remembers. Some of that can sit onchain as text, like a soul file. Private memory, such as a model or a long chat log, is harder. ERC-7857 is the standard that tries to move private data with a proof, so the new owner can read it and others cannot.

Ownership

The wallet that holds the NFT can transfer it, approve a marketplace, or name an operator. On ERC-8004, transfer also clears the agent’s payment wallet until the new owner proves a new one.

Activation

Turning the record into something that talks. For many projects that means copying a prompt into an AI you already use. The chain does not run the chat. Your AI app does. “Activate” is often a setup step, not a second mint.

Permissions

Who may update the profile, who may spend from a wallet bound to the NFT, and who may leave feedback. A good agent NFT separates “owns the token” from “may post as the agent” and from “may move funds.”

Practical use

  • A pet with a fixed personality.
  • A support agent whose reputation stays with the sale.
  • A game character that holds its own items.
  • A research brand whose name is the domain in the header.
